Ning Updates

Monday, October 20th, 2008

Hello Ning Lovers,
We’re glad you guys are as excited as we are about the recent launch of our application on Ning’s social networks. Thanks for bearing with us in the launch. We had a couple bugs, inevitably, but its all cleared up :) Here were some of the problems reported that have been fixed:

- All of the product images and default profile images are now displaying in all browsers
- You can share your products with the ‘Share’ link located right in the application
- The ‘Get this App’ link is working, so all your buddies can get their own stores too.

We hope this helps. Please let us know if you have any other feedback for us about the Ning application. Thanks!

Maximize your Shopit Store on the New Facebook

Thursday, October 16th, 2008

A couple of months ago Facebook launched a new version of their site. To keep up with the changes, we updated our Facebook Shopit Application. Since then, many of our users have been a tiny bit confused about how things work with the new Facebook. So here are a couple tips for all of you to hopefully get a better grip on what you can do with Shopit on the new Facebook.

The Facebook Publisher enables you to publish content— such as photos, links, and videos—directly to your Wall. In Shopit terms, the newest items you’re selling on Shopit, latest sales, new product commercials, and so on. You can add content to your own profile or to a friends’!

The New Facebook Publisher and Tabs

The Tabbed Profile is the new display of your profile. Now you’re in control of the information you want your friends to see. You can add your Shopit store to the new Boxes, Info, and Wall Tabs.
The Boxes Tab is where the majority of the applications you add to your Facebook will show up. Initially, this is where your Shopit store will display once added.
The Info Tab shows information about you that doesn’t change frequently. Include your Shopit store directly to your Info Tab, so it will always display on your profile.
The Wall Tab displays information both by you (that you publish) and about you (that others publish). Add your Shopit store to display your products for all your potential buyers to see. Keep your wall updated with your hottest items and best deals.

If your Shopit Store isn’t showing up on your profile, there’s an easy answer. Under your application settings, click “edit” next to the Shopit Application. A small dialog box will appear with three tabs. Click the “Profile” tab and make sure it says “Box: Added”. If it says “Box: Available” then be sure to click “Add” so that your Shopit store appears on your profile.  That’s it!

One more tip: Once you’ve added the application to your profile, it doesn’t automatically show up on your Wall Tab. Where it does show up? In your Boxes Tab. If you go there, and click on the little pencil looking icon you will see a menu pop up, giving you the option to move it to your Wall Tab.

We hope this helps! Please message us if you have any more questions.

Sell on over 500,000 Social Networks!

Friday, October 10th, 2008

That’s right… We’re pleased to announce that the Shopit Store application is now available to all 500,000 of Ning’s social networks. Haven’t heard of Ning? They are behind the scenes of this white-label social network platform, providing the functionality for users to create and customize their own social networks. Giving users the freedom to build any type of social network has lead to a profound and diverse range of new online communities.

Musicians like 50Cent and T.I. have jumped on board creating their own social networks, ThisIs50 and T.I. community. Mom’s across the world are joining networks created just for them; like Navy Moms and Twitter Moms. From athletes, bloggers, video channels, journalists, students, educators, parents, craft hobbyists, alumni, and interest groups, any user is sure to find a place that’s just for them. If not, then create one; it can be about anything your little heart desires.

Commerce enabling these communities means buying and selling without ever have to leave the page. Talk about convenience! Maybe you’re a member of the Cute Dog Clothes social network? Sell your bling collars to buyers right from your profile page. Chatting with fellow sneakers addicts about the latest kicks? Sell Nike’s new AirMax to your friends with a click of a button. The possibilities are endless.

We’re excited to be a part of Ning’s OpenSocial applications. And we couldn’t have done it, or done it so well :), without the help of the diligent Ning team! Shout-outs to Jinen Kamdar, Will Jelliffe, Ernie Hsiung, Kyle Ford. Thanks for your help guys!

Shopit on the New Facebook

Friday, August 22nd, 2008

If you haven’t already heard, there’s a new Facebook! To keep up with the recent changes, we’ve updated the Shopit Facebook application. So here’s what you can do now with your Shopit Store on the new Facebook.

-The Publisher enables you to publish content— such as the newest items you’re selling on Shopit, latest sales, new product commercials, and so on—directly to your Wall. You can add content to your own profile or to a friends’!

-The Tabbed Profile is the new display of your profile. Now you’re in control of the information you want your friends to see. You can add your Shopit store to the new Info and Wall Tabs.

-The Info Tab shows information about you that doesn’t change frequently. Include your Shopit store directly to your Info Tab, so it will always display on your profile.

-The Wall Tab displays information both by you (that you publish) and about you (that others publish). Add your Shopit store to display your products for all your potential buyers to see. Keep your wall updated with your hottest items and best deals.

We hope these new features will allow you to gain maximum visibility for your store and help you make some money! In addition to these small changes, we’re currently working on a complete overhaul of our Shopit Facebook application. Besides a great design, the new Shopit application will have a ton of new functionality for selling and buying on facebook! We think we’re doing quite a thorough job, but we’re not perfect, so if you have any ideas and suggestions we’d love to hear them!

My trip to Frisco for the Socialmedia OpenThread meetup with hi5, Google, etc.

Monday, August 18th, 2008

Rhett McNulty, Shopit COO, and I flew up to Frisco for the day to attend the Socialmedia OpenThread meetup.  The flight was delayed, the train ride was sweet, and the beer was tasty.

(Write-up continues below picture)

Outside Socialmedia offices in Pier 38

Eddie Smith and the rest of the team from Socialmedia put together a very nice meetup atmosphere with a little financial help from SUN.  There was lots of guac, salsa, chips, cheese, fresh fruit, nuts, and beer, OH MY!

We also received some sweet tee’s that said “Flex your apps” from Socialmedia (I wore mine today with my TOMS shoes).

My favorite presenter would have to be Paul from hi5 (Google was good too :-)) because of the tutorials (thanks!) and the fact that they are changing their page time-out interval just for us (thanks again!).

It was also nice chattin’ it up with one of the engineers from facebook (Luke Shephard). Cool guy.  He and I were discussing some issues they were having with their new east coast data center (ECDC) and memcache (hehe).

David King of (Lil) Green Patch was also there giving pointers.  It was great to meet and talk to him at the end of the presentations to get some dos and don’ts when it comes to the success of social applications.

After drinking some Blue Moon, and then finishing up with a little Pacifico… I think Pacifico was the better of the two but left me with a headache for me to enjoy on the flight home.

Socialmedia shirt, TOMS shoes, Socialmedia office view, Pacifico Beer, respectively.

Because we couldn’t find a taxi near the Socialmedia offices at Pier 38 we had to take a Lincoln Continental, how awesome is that?

All in all, I had a good time.  Met cool people, learned some things, got a few questions answered, and even met a few app developers (Nimit Maru) of some of my favorite apps like Typing Tutor.

Until next time,

Troy (apps honcho)

Friends, Instant Messages, Shopit!

Wednesday, June 11th, 2008

Hello fellow Shopiteers,

We’ve added another platform to the Shopit network and we’re stoked about it!

AIM (AOL Instant Messenger) has been added to the Shopit external applications family. This means more eyeballs for your products, and more sharing tools in your arsenal.

You can instantly tell your friends about your stuff or ask them to tell their friends.

This functionality is built right into the sharing tool… through links in an IM, your friends can do the ultimate hook-up and share your products with their friends. My favorite quote when I’m shopping something is: “Do you know anybody who wants to buy a [insert product name here]“… works every time.

Also, along with this powerful new way to share products, the Shopit Store on AIM gives you all the power you have in external applications… without opening a browser.

You can grab the application here. It requires AIM 6.8 which you can grab here.

Be sure to let us know what you think about it and comment & rate it on this page.

Thanks and enjoy!

Introducing Colors and Sizes… in Apps!

Thursday, May 22nd, 2008

Your products come in all kinds of shapes and forms and now you can let your customers know it right from the Shopit Social Applications.  That’s right, we’ve added Colors and Sizes to our apps, that lets you create the right options for all your products.

How it Works

  1. Click on the “Add Colors and Sizes” link when you’re adding a product.
  2. Add as many colors and sizes as you want by entering the quantity, size, and color for your product.
  • Tip:  You can add either a size, a color, or both!
Add a Product now on facebook
Add a Product now on MySpace
Add a Product with colors and sizes on Bebo (Coming Soon…)

Enjoy!
